A bad workman quarrels with his tools.

The saying criticizes someone who blames equipment, circumstances, or other external factors for poor results when their own lack of skill is the more likely cause.

It warns against making excuses instead of examining one’s competence, preparation, or method. The tools stand for anything a person may unfairly hold responsible for failure.

Use it when someone attributes unsatisfactory work to the tools or conditions rather than acknowledging shortcomings in their own ability or approach.
