English translation

A bug has a hundred young, yet complains that it has too few children.

Literal wording

The bug gives birth to a hundred and says, “What a scarcity of offspring!”

Meaning and lesson

The saying mocks someone who laments having too little despite already possessing an abundance. It portrays the complaint as exaggerated, contrasting an alleged lack with the plenty that is already visible.

It can also condemn insatiable desire, when nothing seems enough despite ample means. Its deliberately derisive image targets complaints judged disproportionate to visible abundance, not every expression of dissatisfaction or genuine hardship.

When it is used

Use it to rebuke repeated complaints of scarcity when someone plainly has ample resources, advantages, or possessions. Because the image is harsh and mocking, avoid directing it at people whose needs or hardship may be real.
