English translation

A parent's heart can soften again.

Literal wording

The heart yearns tenderly.

Meaning and lesson

A parent's love for a child is hard to uproot. Even after a son or daughter has caused hurt and been turned away, tenderness and longing may come back at times, because care for one's offspring lies deep within a parent's heart.

The saying recognizes that a rift between parents and a wayward child need not be the final word. It leaves room for compassion to stir once more, while making no promise about when, or whether, this will happen.

When it is used

Applied to a mother or father who has cast off a son or daughter after being wronged by them, to remark that pity and yearning for that child may still return at times despite the break. Its recorded use concerns this parent-child situation only.
