English translation

A thoroughbred mare is not shamed by a shabby blanket.

Literal wording

The pure-bred mare, her covering-cloth does not disgrace her.

Meaning and lesson

A person of genuine quality keeps their worth whatever they happen to be wearing. Ragged or humble clothing cannot take away standing that already rests on real character. The point is not that appearance never matters, but that a shabby exterior does not lower someone whose merit is genuine.

The image compares a person to a pure-bred mare under a worn blanket, the plain cloth laid over an animal against the cold rather than a saddle or ornament. Anyone who knows horses still sees the animal's fine lineage. Likewise, true merit shows through poverty or plain appearance and is not diminished by it.

When it is used

Use it to defend someone whose plain or worn clothing might lead others to underrate them, or to reassure a person embarrassed by modest dress. It suits remarks about character, dignity, or upbringing, not praise of physical beauty.
