English translation

A warm and smiling welcome is worth more than a meal.

Literal wording

The beaming welcome, and not the eating of bread.

Meaning and lesson

The saying places a friendly, cheerful reception above the food a host provides. What it praises is a smiling, open manner of receiving someone, not any set greeting formula. Bread stands for food and hospitality in general: a bright face and a glad welcome nourish a guest more truly than anything set on the table.

The flip side is a warning against giving with a sour or reluctant manner. A meal handed over coldly is received with discomfort and loses its worth as an act of kindness, so genuine generosity lies as much in demeanour as in what is actually offered.

When it is used

Suitable when praising a host whose warmth mattered more than the meal, or when gently criticising grudging generosity. It can also serve as a reminder that a kind manner is worth offering even when one has little food or material help to give.
