English translation

Camel, if you leave the feed, who's going to eat it?

Literal wording

Who will eat the fodder after you, O camel?

Meaning and lesson

The saying points to the person best equipped for a task. If the strongest, most able one, pictured as a camel facing its feed, cannot or will not finish the job, there is little hope that anyone less capable will take it on and succeed. The image is figurative, not literally about animals or eating.

In use it works either as a lament or as a nudge. It can express dismay when the natural expert gives up. It can also press that person to carry on, reminding them that the burden falls to them because no one else is fit to bear it.

When it is used

Use it when the most capable person backs away from a job, warning that nobody weaker will manage it. It can also gently urge that person not to give up. Saying it to someone directly casts them as the camel, implying a judgement of them.
