- English translation
Don't marry the man you love, and don't go back to the man who divorced you.
- Literal wording
Your lover, do not take him; and your divorcer, do not bring him back.
- Meaning and lesson
This is counsel addressed to a woman, about the men in her life and two risky choices in marriage. First, she should not take as husband the man she is infatuated with, because romantic passion tends, more often than not, to curdle into dislike once the couple actually marry.
Second, she should not go back to a man who has already divorced her. Having walked away once, he has shown he is capable of leaving, and she can never feel secure that he will not end the marriage a second time.
- When it is used
Fits moments when a woman is weighing whether to marry a man she is passionately attached to, or whether to reconcile with a former husband who ended the marriage. It works as cautionary counsel from a relative or friend, favouring stability over feelings.
