Brag's a good dog, but Holdfast is a better.

The proverb imagines two dogs whose names stand for different qualities. Brag may impress, but Holdfast earns the stronger praise.

Its point is that confident claims are worth less than persistence. What someone continues to do matters more than what they say they can do.

Use it to temper praise for someone who talks confidently about a plan, or to commend someone who keeps working despite difficulty. Its playful comparison makes the contrast pointed without stating it as a blunt rebuke.
