English translation

Ever since the day I was born, I have been set down in misery.

Literal wording

From the day they gave birth to me, into worry they put me.

Meaning and lesson

The speaker presents misfortune, meaning worry, grief and hardship together, as something they were placed into at birth, as if their parents had laid them down in trouble on the very first day. The image points to fate, not to any real fault of the parents, and the rhyming verbs give it the compact ring of a lament.

The saying marks a person who has been unlucky for as long as anyone can remember. It carries resignation more than anger: the trouble is treated as an old companion, and each new blow is simply one more confirmation of a lot assigned from the start.

When it is used

Said by someone, or about someone, whose bad luck seems lifelong. It suits a weary or self-pitying complaint after yet another setback, and can be voiced in the first person as a sigh or quoted on behalf of a chronically unfortunate person.
