- English translation
Every fortune has something that eats it away.
- Literal wording
Every treasure has a ruin upon it.
- Meaning and lesson
Here مطلب means a treasure or hoard, not a request, and مهلك is whatever consumes that wealth: expenses, obligations, or losses, not violent destruction or a curse. However much wealth comes to a person, some outlet waits to consume it, so a large fortune does not stay whole.
The proverb also carries a warning against envy. Since nobody sees what another household must pay out, judging someone lucky because of their visible riches is premature. Before coveting a neighbor's money, one should consider the burdens that money is quietly being spent on.
- When it is used
Use it when someone admires or resents another person's apparent riches, as a reminder that the money may already be committed to heavy costs. It also fits moments of reflecting on one's own income vanishing into necessary spending.
