English translation

Everyone has the sleep caked over their own eyes.

Literal wording

Everyone, his eye-crust is covering over his eyes.

Meaning and lesson

Every person carries flaws that sit so close to them that they cannot see them. The image is the whitish crust that gathers in the inner corners of the eyes, not tears or dust: something unclean that is one's own, noticed by others, yet lying right where one's own sight is blocked.

The proverb therefore points to a general human blindness toward one's own defects. People readily notice the failings of others, while their own faults cloud their self-perception, keeping them from recognizing what is plain to everyone around them.

When it is used

Suitable when someone harshly faults others while ignoring their own shortcomings, or as a wry reminder that nobody judges themselves clearly. It carries a mildly scolding, deflating tone, so aim it with care when speaking directly to a person.
