- English translation
Everyone is a king in their own eyes.
- Literal wording
Every human being is a sultan within himself.
- Meaning and lesson
The saying holds that every person carries a sense of worth and self-respect, ruling over an inner domain as a sultan rules a realm. However humble outward circumstances may be, each individual regards themselves with dignity and expects that dignity to be honored.
From this follows a moral warning: looking down on someone because they are poor or of lowly status is unfair. The Arabic pairs insān with sulṭān in a closing rhyme, linking the ordinary human being to the figure of a monarch and making the claim to equal dignity memorable.
- When it is used
Suitable when someone is being belittled, ignored, or treated as worthless because of poverty or low standing. It serves as a reminder to show respect, or as a defense of one's own dignity against condescension from people of higher rank or means.
