- English translation
Everything he has takes after him.
- Literal wording
Every thing of his resembles him.
- Meaning and lesson
The saying claims that whatever belongs to a person carries his own stamp, especially his shortcomings. Someone of low quality tends to select things and associates of equally low quality, so his possessions end up mirroring him.
It also extends to behaviour. A person's actions and circumstances flow naturally from his inborn disposition, so one should expect nothing from him beyond what his character already displays.
- When it is used
Use it sarcastically about someone whose possessions, picks, companions or behaviour turn out as shabby or flawed as the person. It can also be used to remark that a person's conduct simply matches his ingrained character. It is disparaging, not neutral praise.
