English translation

First a death, then the whole household brought to ruin.

Literal wording

Death, and the ruin of homes.

Meaning and lesson

The saying describes a grief that does not end with the death itself. The loss of a person brings a second wave of harm to those left behind, so the family must bear both the bereavement and the material or social collapse that follows from it. Diyār means homes or households, not a country.

It works as a compact lament for compounded misfortune where one blow produces the next. The speaker treats the later troubles as consequences flowing from the death, not as unrelated bad luck, and so stresses how a single loss can unravel a whole household.

When it is used

Use it when a death is followed by further calamities that stem from it, to sum up the combined weight of the loss and the troubles it sets in motion for the people left behind.
