Meaning: Verified
English translation

Greed has never yet amassed anything.

Literal wording

The lifetime of greed: it has not gathered.

Meaning and lesson

The saying denies that greed has ever truly gathered anything. It names no object, so the gain might be wealth, savings or anything else. Grasping for ever more is presented as a habit that fails to produce lasting gain, however much it promises.

It condemns avarice as a trait as well as warning about its results. The greedy person is portrayed as working against their own interest.

When it is used

Used to censure greed, for example when someone grasps for more than is reasonable and risks what they already hold. It works as a cautionary remark or a rueful comment after a greedy scheme has failed to pay off.
