- English translation
He escaped the fire only for the crow to swallow him.
- Literal wording
Coming out of the fire, the crow met him and gulped him down.
- Meaning and lesson
The saying pictures an unnamed escapee, commonly imagined as a small bird, struggling free of a blaze only to be bluntly gulped down whole by a crow waiting just beyond the flames. Surviving the first disaster turns out to be no rescue at all, because ruin arrives from another direction moments later.
At a deeper level it expresses a fatalistic view: what is destined will reach a person by one route or another. Dodging one cause of harm does not cancel the result, since another cause simply takes its place and completes what was already decreed.
- When it is used
Use it when someone narrowly survives one danger and is then undone by a different, unforeseen one. It also suits remarks about an outcome that seemed bound to happen whatever precautions were taken. It reads as rueful resignation, not mockery of the victim.
