Meaning and lesson

The saying observes that strong desire makes absence feel more acute. A person may possess much yet feel deprived chiefly of whatever they crave most intensely; it need not mean they have the least material wealth.

It can also caution against boundless wanting: enlarging one’s desires may enlarge one’s sense of insufficiency rather than bring contentment. The point concerns felt deprivation and dissatisfaction, not a measure of actual possessions.

When it is used

Use it as a reflective comment on dissatisfaction, envy, or the emotional cost of intense craving. The older generic form “He that” sounds dated in contemporary prose and gives the saying a proverbial, literary tone rather than a casual conversational one.
