Hope is a good breakfast, but a bad supper.

The saying treats hope as valuable at the outset: it can lift spirits and make a difficult beginning feel possible.

Its warning is that optimism cannot sustain a person indefinitely when it is not accompanied by practical means or action.

Use this when someone has encouragement or optimism but needs to move beyond it toward concrete steps, support, or a workable plan.
