English translation

It's only a thrashing. It will pass, and no one ever died of one.

Literal wording

A beating, and it goes by; nobody dies.

Meaning and lesson

The speaker pictures a single round of blows that must be taken and finds comfort in its limits. The blows will land, the episode will end, and life will carry on. Something that hurts but cannot kill does not deserve dread in advance, since it will soon be over and forgotten.

More broadly, the proverb sets aside harms that do not threaten one's survival. When some loss, punishment, or hardship cannot be avoided and causes no lasting ruin, worrying over it is pointless. Better to accept it, bear it, and let it fade from memory along with the passing episode. It counsels endurance, not approval of beating or violence.

When it is used

Say it to steady yourself or someone else before or after an unpleasant but survivable ordeal, such as a reprimand, a penalty, or a painful obligation. It treats the hardship as unavoidable and recommends enduring it calmly instead of dwelling on it.
