English translation

Knowing when to run away is half the art of being smart.

Literal wording

Fleeing is half of cleverness.

Meaning and lesson

The proverb holds that getting out of a bad situation is itself a large share of cleverness; "half" is rhetorical exaggeration, not a measured claim. Lingering where trouble is brewing can bring injury or unwelcome consequences, so a shrewd person recognizes the moment to withdraw rather than insisting on staying put.

In practice it reframes retreat as a skill. Leaving early is presented not as cowardice, weakness or defeat but as sound judgment, and the speaker may use it to praise a timely escape, to recommend avoiding a conflict, or to justify having walked away.

When it is used

Say it when someone wisely slips away from a quarrel, a risky deal, or a looming problem, or when urging a friend to leave rather than stay and get hurt. It fits light, informal talk and can also excuse one's own hasty exit.
