English translation

Let my children be the price paid for me; as long as I live, I stay a nail in my enemies' side.

Literal wording

My children are my ransom, and I am nails to my enemies.

Meaning and lesson

The saying gives a grieving parent a way to bear the death of children. It presents the loss as a sacrifice made on the parent's behalf, a consoling outlook rather than indifference toward the children, so continued life is seen as purchased at great cost, not simply as being left behind.

It also answers people who are glad about the misfortune. The survivor's continued presence is a lasting irritant to those enemies, like nails pressing into them; the image is not a threat of violence. Grief becomes defiance, and the gloaters are denied the satisfaction of seeing the household wiped out.

When it is used

A grave phrase of condolence, not a casual quip, said to a parent whose children have died, especially when hostile people seem pleased by the loss. It consoles by treating the loss as a sacrifice and encouraging the mourner to endure so enemies have no lasting triumph.
