English translation

Live beside the lucky, and their luck will rub off on you.

Literal wording

Whoever neighbors the fortunate one becomes fortunate.

Meaning and lesson

The saying holds that good fortune spreads by proximity. Whoever settles close to a blessed or prosperous person is thought to catch some of that luck, as though happiness passed from one life to the next through simple nearness, and the neighbor ends up fortunate in the same way.

The Arabic draws its force from repeating one root: the fortunate person, al-saʿīd, and the verb for becoming fortunate, yisʿad, echo each other. That echo frames fortune as something shared and absorbed, encouraging people to seek out good company and to value living beside those who already thrive.

When it is used

Fits moments when someone praises a lucky or prosperous person, or advises another to stay near such company in the hope of sharing its benefits. It can also be said, lightly, by someone whose fortunes improved after joining a successful household, partner, or circle.
