English translation

Make enemies of people, and you'll spend your nights awake.

Literal wording

Whoever takes men as enemies does not sleep at night.

Meaning and lesson

Enmity is pictured as a burden that the one who creates it must carry. Once someone sets himself against others, the calm he gave up does not return; the sleepless night stands for a mind that can never stand down and must keep watching for whatever harm an opponent might do.

The proverb therefore argues against hostility and in favor of restraint. Its weight falls not on the enemies but on the person who chooses conflict: by provoking others, he takes on a restless existence that he brings upon himself.

When it is used

Fitting when someone seems ready to start a quarrel or turn others against himself; the line discourages the move by pointing to the unease that follows, and it also serves more broadly to criticize hostility and urge people to avoid it.

Register
Colloquial; the wording reflects spoken dialectal Arabic rather than formal literary style
