English translation

No good comes to us, and no peace of mind either.

Literal wording

Neither kindness, nor peace of mind.

Meaning and lesson

The saying describes a doubly unlucky state. The speaker receives no kindness, favor, or material good from others, and at the same time enjoys no settled mind. Both possible consolations, outward benefit and inward ease, are missing.

It is applied to anyone whose condition matches this picture, often as a weary complaint. The two short negated halves set the lack of outside help beside the lack of inner rest, so neither loss can be offset by the other.

When it is used

Use it for someone, or a group speaking of itself, who has lost on both counts: no good treatment comes their way, and they have no inner calm to make up for it. It suits complaints about a situation that brings neither benefit nor peace.
