Meaning and lesson

Even an enviable or luxurious form of constraint remains a constraint. Wealth, status, comfort, or ornament cannot fully compensate for the loss of freedom and personal choice.

The saying warns against judging a limiting arrangement solely by its rewards. What appears privileged from outside may still feel burdensome to the person whose actions are controlled. Its older wording uses “man” generically.

When it is used

Use it when material advantages, prestige, or comfort are offered at the price of independence. It can express sympathy for someone in a restrictive role or caution against accepting benefits that create unwanted dependence. It does not reject all obligations or freely chosen commitments.
