English translation

Once milk has curdled, it can never be fresh again.

Literal wording

Milk that has set into curds does not go back to being fresh milk.

Meaning and lesson

The saying holds that some transformations run in one direction only. Once time or circumstance has reshaped something, whether a bond, a reputation, or a state of affairs, wishing or effort will not reverse the change. It counsels accepting the new reality instead of chasing a former condition that no longer exists.

It can also apply to the human life span, contrasting youth with old age. A person who has grown old cannot recover the freshness of earlier years, just as thickened milk cannot regain its original liquid state. In this sense the proverb carries a wistful, accepting tone about aging.

When it is used

Say it when someone hopes to restore a situation, relationship, or condition that has fundamentally changed, or when reflecting on lost youth. It suits resigned or gently realistic remarks rather than harsh rebukes, and it works for people and circumstances alike.
