English translation

One chicken shared by four is of use to no one.

Literal wording

A chicken among four: there is no benefit in it.

Meaning and lesson

The image is a single chicken that four people must share. Cut into four portions, it fills nobody, so the meal accomplishes nothing for any of them. A thing can have genuine worth and still lose it once it is parceled out among too many people.

More generally, the saying comments on scarce goods divided among many claimants. Its point is dilution through division, not quarreling among those who share. When the whole is small, each share can be too slight to matter, so the value disappears through distribution itself.

When it is used

Say it when a modest amount, such as a small sum, a limited stock, or a single opportunity, is being spread across several people, to point out that each portion will be too small to help anyone.
