English translation

The man who marries my lady becomes my master too.

Literal wording

Whoever marries my lady, I call him “my master.”

Meaning and lesson

The proverb treats a husband as sharing the rank of the woman he marries. If she holds authority over the speaker, he must receive the same deferential address; “lady” here reflects an older hierarchical sense, not a sexual one.

It conveys acquiescence in a changed hierarchy: marriage can require respect that might not otherwise have been owed. Its premise reflects historical assumptions about rank and marital status, rather than endorsing those assumptions.

When it is used

Use it to explain why deference is extended to someone because marriage has linked him to a person of higher standing. It frames that respect as a practical obligation of the relationship, not necessarily as personal admiration.
