English translation

The offender went and lodged a complaint against his own self.

Literal wording

The culprit complained about himself.

Meaning and lesson

The image is of a wrongdoer, the ḥawwāṭ or culprit rather than an ordinary complainant, who instead of escaping notice goes and complains about himself. Here rūḥuh means himself, not his soul. He becomes the cause of his own trouble, so the one bringing harm and the one suffering it are the same.

It is aimed at people who walk knowingly or carelessly toward their own downfall. Through their words, choices, or attempts at protest, they create the very danger that ends up catching them. The tone is ironic: the victim needs no outside enemy, having already supplied the blow.

When it is used

Say it when someone's own action or complaint backfires, such as a person whose accusation ends up revealing their own fault. It is a dry, mocking remark about a self-made predicament, not sympathy for a genuine grievance.
