English translation

Too many greetings wear a friendship thin.

Literal wording

Much greeting makes acquaintance less.

Meaning and lesson

Here 'acquaintance' means friendship or companionship, not learning or information. Greeting a friend is a courtesy that normally builds closeness, yet the saying holds that heaping on greetings beyond measure works in reverse, so the very friendship those greetings were meant to nourish ends up diminished rather than strengthened.

More generally, the saying warns that excess reverses a thing's value. Something welcome in moderation becomes tiresome or even harmful when overdone, so restraint protects what eagerness would spoil.

When it is used

Suitable when greetings or similar courtesies are repeated well past the point of usefulness, and more widely as a reminder that overdoing even a welcome thing can bring about the opposite of what was intended.
