- English translation
Too much talk comes to nothing.
- Literal wording
Abundance of talk is failure.
- Meaning and lesson
The saying holds that piling up words yields nothing. Long speeches, repeated claims, and endless explanation fail to bring the benefit the speaker hopes for, and they may even work against that speaker. Measured, brief speech is treated as the useful kind, while verbosity counts as wasted effort. The target is excess and idle talk, not speaking as such.
A second, sharper reading is folded into the same words: a person who talks a great deal may be showing that talk is the only thing they can do. Heavy speech then exposes an inability to act. Both senses stand together: the futility of the words and what they reveal of the talker.
- When it is used
Fits moments when someone keeps arguing, promising, or explaining without producing anything, as a nudge to stop talking and act. It also works as self-advice before a meeting or dispute. Aimed at a specific person, it can sound dismissive, so tone and relationship matter.
