English translation

Turn the calf loose, and it will find its own mother.

Literal wording

Let the calf loose; it will know its mother.

Meaning and lesson

The image is pastoral: a young calf, once untied, needs no guide to reach its mother, because instinct leads it straight to her through the whole herd. Holding it back or steering it only gets in the way of a bond that already knows its direction.

Applied to people, the saying holds that someone left to their own inclination tends to turn toward their family, unless outside interference such as gossip, malicious talk, or stirring up resentment keeps them away. It describes natural attachment to kin when nothing intervenes, not a promise that every estranged person will reconcile.

When it is used

Use it when someone is being pressured, coached, or turned against relatives, to argue they should be left free, since unhindered they tend to drift back to family. Do not confuse it with a similar calf saying about suckling time, which carries a different meaning.
