English translation

What you put in the manger, you get back in the milk pail.

Literal wording

Put it in its feeding trough, you will find it in its milking bowl.

Meaning and lesson

The saying ties output directly to input: an animal's milk rises or falls with the kind and amount of fodder it receives. Whatever feed you place in the trough reappears later as milk in a separate earthenware milking bowl, so a stingy hand at feeding time means a thin yield.

More broadly, it expresses the idea that care, provision, and investment come back in proportion to what was given. It can encourage generous upkeep of anything productive, or gently remind a complainer that a poor return reflects what was put in, without implying judgment.

When it is used

Suitable when someone expects good results without matching effort or care, or when noting that a generous investment has paid off. It fits practical talk about livestock, work, or upbringing, stressing proportional return rather than moral reward or punishment.
