English translation

When the home has need of the oil, it must not go to the mosque.

Literal wording

The oil, if the house needs it, is forbidden to the mosque.

Meaning and lesson

A household's own needs come before gifts to outside causes, even pious ones. If the family still needs the oil, giving it to the mosque is wrong. Generosity is welcome once the people one is directly responsible for have what they require; the saying sets an order of priority rather than rejecting charity.

The oil can stand for any everyday necessity, and the mosque for any worthy cause beyond the home. Calling the gift 'forbidden' is strong wording; it may be rhetorical emphasis or a sincere moral judgment, but either way it puts the home's claim first.

When it is used

Use it when someone wants to give away money, food, or effort that their own household still needs, or to defend putting family first. It can also gently rebuke generosity toward outsiders that leaves dependents short.
