English translation

When you must keep someone company, try to get along with them.

Literal wording

Whoever you accompany, agree with him.

Meaning and lesson

The saying advises accommodation in a relationship that cannot readily be avoided. Constant opposition toward a companion or associate can make shared time burdensome for both people.

It values tact, cooperation, and reducing needless friction when people must travel, work, or spend time together. It should not be taken to demand surrendering every view, justified disagreement, or personal boundaries.

When it is used

It may be said when advising someone to be more flexible with a person they regularly accompany or deal with, especially when repeated disagreements are making the relationship difficult; its appeal to harmony should not be used to dismiss justified objections or boundaries.
