English translation

Wherever nightfall catches you, stay the night right there.

Literal wording

The place where you come to evening, spend the night.

Meaning and lesson

Pairing the Arabic verbs for reaching evening and spending the night, the saying advises a traveler overtaken by evening to stop and sleep at whatever spot he has reached. He should not be fussy or insist on pressing ahead to somewhere better, because that choice is not really his, and traveling on after dark exposes him to danger.

More broadly, it recommends accepting the place and conditions in which circumstances leave you, at least for the moment, instead of straining against them. Make do with where the day has ended, since stubbornly reaching for more can bring harm. It is not praise for drifting through life without a plan.

When it is used

Fits moments when someone is tempted to push onward late, or to hold out for better arrangements, and a companion urges them to stop and settle for what the current spot offers rather than risk the road or the delay.
