English translation

Whoever has good sense is the one who gets worn out.

Literal wording

The sensible one is tired.

Meaning and lesson

Good judgment carries a cost. Here the sensible person is someone prudent and of sound judgment, not necessarily learned or brilliant. Weighing outcomes and accepting burdens others shrug off leaves such a person more strained than those who act without reflection. The weariness meant is mental and moral strain, not illness.

The heedless may seem more comfortable because they never trouble themselves with foresight, but the proverb does not praise that ease. Nor does it contradict the idea that people of reason live at ease: that idea means they are spared fools' useless exertions, while this saying points to the burden of foresight and responsibility.

When it is used

Suitable when someone notes, sympathetically or wryly, that a careful, responsible person is worn out by worrying about consequences and shouldering burdens that carefree people ignore. It can console a conscientious friend or gently explain why the prudent seem more troubled.
