- English translation
Whoever has right on their side has standing, and has the right to speak.
- Literal wording
The owner of the right: to him a standing, and to him a saying.
- Meaning and lesson
The saying holds that justice confers authority. Since حق covers both being in the right and being owed something, a person whose cause is sound, or who holds a legitimate claim such as a creditor, earns a respected standing (مقام) in others' eyes, and their words carry weight.
It also grants permission to speak. Whoever holds a genuine claim need not stay quiet or apologize for raising it; they may state their case openly and expect to be heard. The parallel halves, closing on the near-rhyming مقام and مقال, link social standing with the freedom to voice one's demand.
- When it is used
Fits moments when someone with a just claim hesitates to press it, or when others try to silence them. It reassures the claimant that their position entitles them to speak, or reminds onlookers that the person who is owed something deserves a respectful hearing.
