English translation

Whoever has their heart set on something turns foolish over it.

Literal wording

The one who wants is a fool.

Meaning and lesson

Eager desire clouds a person's judgment. Someone set on having a thing no longer inspects it closely; flaws that would be obvious to a neutral observer go unnoticed or are excused, and the thing is accepted whole, faults and all, as if wanting it had made the person simple.

The saying also points to the practical cost of that eagerness. A buyer who badly wants an item is easy to exploit: they agree to steep prices, ignore defects, and surrender any advantage in a deal, because walking away feels impossible to them.

When it is used

Suited to moments when someone keen on a purchase or arrangement ignores clear drawbacks or overpays. Best offered as a wry observation about the situation; directed at the eager person themselves, the blunt word for 'fool' may come across as mockery.
