English translation

Whoever wins your heart is your darling, even if that someone is a bear.

Literal wording

Your beloved is the one you love, even if he were a bear.

Meaning and lesson

Affection follows its own logic. The person who becomes dear to us is the one our heart settles on and grows used to, not necessarily someone whose looks or qualities would win everyone's approval. Though the grammar is masculine, the beloved may be of any gender, or a cherished friend.

The saying answers outsiders who question an attachment. The bear is a figure of plainness or uncouthness, not a literal claim about animals. However rough the chosen one may appear, the bond is valid because it rests on inclination rather than merit; it does not claim the lover is blind to faults.

When it is used

Use it lightheartedly when someone's choice of partner or friend puzzles others, or when defending your own attachment against criticism. It fits teasing, gentle conversation better than serious argument, and could sting if aimed pointedly at the person being likened to a bear.
