- Meaning and lesson
Deep affection can make plain speech difficult. In its archaic wording, the saying suggests that feeling, vulnerability, and fear of causing hurt may leave a person unable to put much into words with those who matter most.
It observes a contrast between the intensity of love and the ease of expression, rather than a lack of feeling. Silence or restraint toward a loved one may arise because the relationship is emotionally important; it does not prove that silence always signifies love.
- When it is used
Use it when someone struggles to voice affection, gratitude, apology, or other heartfelt thoughts to a cherished person. It can gently explain emotional reserve, but should not excuse avoiding necessary communication or assume that silence necessarily shows love.
