English translation

You can only be generous with what you actually have.

Literal wording

Generosity [comes] from what is on hand.

Meaning and lesson

Here jūda means generosity, not the similar-looking modern jawda, 'quality'. Openhandedness depends on having something to give. A person may come from a line famed for hospitality, yet that heritage counts for nothing when the cupboard is bare. Means, not pedigree, decide what anyone can actually offer.

The saying also defends people who cannot help. When someone fails to give, it shifts the blame from their character to their circumstances: the shortfall lies in their resources, not in a lack of goodwill or a miserly heart.

When it is used

Use it when someone expects generosity from a person with little to spare, or when pushing back against the idea that hospitality depends on noble ancestry. It can defend someone's willingness to give while acknowledging the limits of their means.
