English translation

You think you have plenty? Time has more days than you have wealth.

Literal wording

O you who think it a lot, time is more.

Meaning and lesson

The saying warns a person who feels secure because their own wealth seems large; it is not about begrudging what someone else has. However much they have, the days ahead are greater in number, and time will gradually wear their fortune away.

At its core it advises humility and prudence. Abundance can make people careless, but time has emptied the purses of many before, and it can do the same to anyone who trusts too much in plenty.

When it is used

Said to someone who is confident that their money or possessions will outlast any hardship. It works as a sober caution against complacency or overspending, reminding the listener that time is long and resources run out.
