English translation

You're winking in the dark. Who's going to notice?

Literal wording

O you who wink in the darkness, who is aware of you?

Meaning and lesson

The image is a wink given in pitch darkness. A wink exists to be seen and understood, so making one where no eye can catch it defeats its whole purpose. The proverb asks a mocking question that already contains its answer: nobody. The focus is wasted signaling, not flirtation or mischief.

Applied to life, it describes effort spent where it cannot register. Work done entirely out of sight, with no witness or acknowledgment, may cost real energy yet bring no benefit, response, or credit to the person doing it. It faults the waste; it is not praise for quiet, unshowy good deeds.

When it is used

Use it, often wryly, when someone puts effort into something nobody can see, such as a hidden gesture, unnoticed work, or a hint no one catches, and so gets no result or recognition.
