English translation

You've taken your neighbor's spindle, but where on earth do you plan to spin with it?

Literal wording

O you who take your neighbor's spindle, where are you going to spin with it?

Meaning and lesson

The saying mocks anyone who wrongs the people right next to them. A neighbor's spindle, a tool for household spinning, is a familiar object, and the neighbor lives close enough to watch every move. The thief cannot use it without being recognized, so the theft defeats itself before bringing any benefit.

More broadly, it warns that misdeeds within one's close circle are nearly impossible to conceal or enjoy, since those nearby know your belongings and habits. The point is the folly of the act, not that wronging strangers is acceptable. Speakers apply it to reckless schemes where the victim is best placed to discover the deception.

When it is used

Use it to ridicule a scheme whose cover is obviously thin, especially wrongdoing against people close by who will inevitably notice. It suits teasing or pointed warnings among acquaintances rather than formal accusation.
