  • Arabic

    «مَا وَرَا الصَّبْرْ إِلَّا الْقَبْرْ»

Once patience runs out, only the grave is left.

The speaker has endured for so long that patience no longer seems to lead anywhere. The only thing left on the far side of all that waiting is death itself, so the line marks the point where endurance stops feeling like a path toward relief. In Arabic, the words for patience and grave rhyme.

  • Arabic

    «اللِّي تْدَارِيهْ تِغْلَبْ فِيهْ»

Trying to keep someone constantly satisfied will exhaust you.

The saying warns that continually accommodating a demanding person can become exhausting. When someone must keep yielding to another’s wishes, the effort may become a burden with no easy end.

  • Arabic

    «قَالُوا: مَا لِكْ بِتِجْرِي وِتْهَرْوِلِي؟ قَالِتْ: بِنْتُ اخْتِي عَامْلَهْ فَرَحْ»

"Why are you rushing around like that?" they asked. "My niece is having a wedding," she replied.

The saying is applied to a person who exhausts themselves through constant striving and busyness. It points to someone whose energy is being spent in rushing from one demand to the next until the fatigue becomes plain to see.

  • Arabic

    «اِللِّي جَرَى لِي كَفَّى، خَلِّي خَلِيِّ الْبَالْ يِتْشَفَّى»

I have suffered enough—let my untroubled enemy enjoy my misfortune.

The saying voices a sense of having endured all one can bear. It resigns itself bitterly to an opponent's satisfaction, as though further hardship would add nothing to pain already suffered.

  • English

A seemingly minor additional burden can trigger collapse when it comes after many earlier pressures. The final event is not necessarily the heaviest problem; it matters because accumulated strain has already reached its limit.

  • English

Sustained pressure can weaken something that initially seems strong. The bent bow makes the cost of prolonged strain tangible.
