English translation

Join a funeral if you must, but stay out of arranging a marriage.

Literal wording

Walk in a funeral procession, but do not walk in a wedding.

Meaning and lesson

The saying warns against serving as an intermediary in a marriage. If the couple later quarrel or prove incompatible, the person who brought the match together may become a target of blame from one side or the other.

Its deliberately sharp contrast presents even a sad public duty as safer than taking responsibility for another household's marital choice. It is not a general objection to weddings or marriage, but advises restraint where a matchmaker's well-meant role may later become contentious.

When it is used

Used to discourage matchmaking, endorsing a proposed union, or otherwise taking responsibility for bringing two people into marriage. It may be said when an introduction could leave the intermediary blamed for later domestic conflict, rather than as criticism of the prospective spouses or of marriage itself.
