English translation

Let a coward die, and he turns into a gallant horseman.

Literal wording

The coward dies; he becomes a horseman of horses.

Meaning and lesson

The proverb mocks the habit of glorifying people once they are gone. A man known in life for timidity is suddenly remembered as a fearless rider, as though death had rewritten his character. The joke lies in the gap between the plain truth everyone knew and the flattering legend that replaces it.

Its sharpest image is the reversal itself: the coward, the least likely candidate for heroism, is the one transformed into a mounted fighter. That extreme contrast makes the point that posthumous praise can credit a person with merits wholly absent from their actual life.

When it is used

Fits moments when someone who has died is being spoken of with qualities they never displayed while alive. The remark is ironic, targeting the exaggerated praise rather than admiring the deceased, and gently points out the distance between the remembered figure and the real person.
