English translation

One household's abundance cannot supply another household's needs.

Literal wording

A full house does not fill an empty house.

Meaning and lesson

The image contrasts two dwellings: one stocked, the other bare. However much the first contains, its store does not pass to the second. Its provisions serve that household’s own needs, so the existence of plenty elsewhere does not itself relieve an empty home.

From that image comes a lesson in self-reliance. A family’s security depends on provision it has gathered for itself; other people’s visible resources are no substitute for preparation, since those resources are held to meet their owners’ needs as well.

When it is used

Suitable as a gentle reminder to someone relying on others’ resources to keep their own home running, or as encouragement to build up one’s own reserves rather than expecting another household’s apparent plenty to cover one’s needs.
