English translation

Whoever is desperate grinds on the newly chiseled stone.

Literal wording

The one in need tips [his grain] onto the freshly dressed millstone.

Meaning and lesson

Necessity removes the luxury of waiting for ideal conditions. A person who urgently needs something will accept it in a flawed or inferior state, while someone with time to spare can hold back until circumstances improve and the quality is better.

The image sets pressure against patience. A newly re-chiseled millstone sheds grit into the first flour ground on it. Those without urgent need let others grind first and then use a clean stone. Those who are desperate must pour their grain on at once and accept flour mixed with dust. Urgency, in other words, has a cost.

When it is used

Use it when someone accepts poor terms, faulty goods, or bad timing because they cannot afford to wait. It can excuse a compromise made under pressure or gently note that urgency, not choice, drove a decision. It works best when the person had a better option that required patience.
